Music that Moves You During the Holidays

Updated: Aug 13, 2021

Music makes the holidays better.

In our home, we have strong opinions about when to start playing holiday music. Some family members declare November 1 the opening of the holiday music season. Others wait until the day after Thanksgiving.

A couple of years ago, we created a Roehlkepartain holiday playlist. Each family member chose his or her current 25 favorite holidays songs, and we put them all together. Of course, one advocated that our cat, Kala, also be represented. Thus, a song from Jingle Cats appeared in the mix.

Besides listening to music, we attend holiday concerts. We love going to Orchestra Hall, and we find countless concerts around us at attend.

Since I play flute, I also perform whenever I can. This year, I’m playing Advent music on Wednesday evenings at our congregation. Last year, I played flute on Christmas Eve.

To me, music adds beauty and wonder and joy to the season. And nothing’s better than hearing Nat King Cole sing Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.
